Project description
My paper on Kant will be, broadly speaking, about the position and meaning of the Kantian aesthetics in this "post-modern" age. As well known, in his aesthetic works Kant tried to bridge the gap between scientific knowledge (determinism) and moral sentiment (freedom). His third Critique is a tie conneting his first and second Critique. However, from the end of 19th century, aestheticians and artists have come to think "the beautiful" in its own right. In other words, the beautiful seems to have become more and more indifference to its moral value. Then, is the Kantian aesthetics no longer valid? If not completely invalid, what parts of the Kantian aesthetics are still alive in aesthetics today? I will briefly survey the history of aesthetics from Kant to present day and discuss these issues from the so-called "analytical aesthetic" point of view. In doing so, I would like to discern the parting of the ways between Kant and us with regard to aesthetic values. If time permits, I will also discuss the universality of aesthetic judgment.
